Land Rover Series 3 Light Weight Soft Top Petrol 1978 "The Desert Rat" #229
KYA772T is a fine example of the Series 3 Air Portable Lightweight 88 inch Land Rover
09GX96
Extensive historical documentation includes a letter from Land Rover Solihull Traceability Department stating the vehicle was built on the 8th of December 1978. A copy of the microfiche history shows that it was originally finished in bronze green and was based at Ashchurch and Hilton military bases for the early part of its life.
The “Rat” bears the correct chassis plate showing the military registration number, build number and Commission number which will facilitate further research as to its history a pleasurable task for its future owner .
Its previous owner was obviously a hardcore enthusiast with a flair for detail as the truck is fitted with high quality single post later TD model adjustable seats covered by Exmoor trim sand covered utility covers.
Instead of the usual third seat or blank panel the vehicle is fitted with a laser cut steel looking Storage Solutions locker box.
Other features include the convoy “garden gate” style front bumpers, NATO hitch, authentic pickaxe and shovel, Screw-off side light lens, [the truck is 12v], safety hoop seat belt brackets with inertia reel belts and is fitted with recent Max's B751 radial tyres all round. The original bonnet mounted spare fittings are present and correct, though for the sake of practicality the previous owner has equipped the car with a rear mounted internal spare.
The black-out lights and dash lights are present.
The vehicle is fitted with a high quality LPG system which functions perfectly and all the instrumentation is present and correct with the original Lucas switches in the correct positions and seemingly functioning perfectly. as can be seen in the photos the vehicle is finished in a desert style camo finish reminiscent of the North African campaign Desert Rats and the mythical Pink Panther Wolves as used in Iraq and Afghanistan
The original wing top radio boxes have been retained, As has the hood stick set with reinforced hoop and the sand coloured canvas tilt.
The engine runs smoothly and the gearbox I'll transfer case our type and operate with satisfying precision. This vehicle would benefit from a good run and they break service having been dry stored for many years.
Please note that the black patches visible on the chassis are where the camouflage paint has flacked off and the original black chassis paint is visible underneath. It is not corrosion.
V5 present.
