NewsMonday 28 April 2014
The Easter Bank Holiday arrived a little later this year, welcoming in the Kelmarsh Country Show to Kelmarsh’s glorious grounds. With the Bank Holiday came the expected light drizzles although the Easter Monday also welcomed in some lovely spring sunshine which in turn brought families, individuals and sports men and women out in their thousands.
Visitors to this year’s show were treated to a variety of entertainment in the Main Arena, with family favourites the Knights of Middle England bringing the age-old sport of jousting back to the showground. The weekend’s festivities also played host to an all-new Gundog Challenge, which not only was a first for handlers attending Kelmarsh it was also a first of its kind at any outdoor countryside event. This knockout style challenge saw 144 handlers and their dogs perform two retrieves across the weekend, with their times accumulated to give an overall time and placing. The two fastest times from each day then went in a head-to-head challenge on the Monday, which crowned Kevin Warburton and his dog KD the first ever champions for 2014 and winners of a fantastic £500 cash prize too.
Elsewhere throughout the weekend, visitors took time out and enjoyed Jonathan Marshall’s amazing falconry display complete with his beautiful Andalusian and Lusitano horses, the Essex Dog Display Team with dogs performing some death-defying agility stunts, demonstrations by seasoned fishermen Hywel Morgan and Chris Green amongst many other superb features. Show Director, Jerome Roberts welcomes in a fantastic response to the first event of the 2014 season. “The weekend’s events have once again exceeded expectations with hundreds of thousands of people getting into the celebratory atmosphere and having fun. Not only does Kelmarsh have an array of acts and features for the family, it also plays host to many qualifying rounds in some fantastic sporting disciplines. With another four events still left in the Countryman Fairs calendar, we expect a fantastic year to come!”
Kelmarsh has also played host to the first two qualifying rounds in both the Great Wall Motor World Series Clay Shooting Championship and the Great Wall Motor World Series Gundog Championship with Chudleys, the World Hunter Field Target Championship, which saw more competitors than ever take part, the ATEO Junior Airgun Championship and the Terrier and Lurcher events.
